FINZ E-News with Blackbaud DECEMber 2011
A word from the CEO
Kia ora ,
It has been an eventful few weeks with rugby slowly fading from the front pages of the papers apart from who will be coaching whom over the next year.
Well, FINZ is also going through an invigorating coaching review as we finalise our professional development planning for 2012. We had a feast of professional development in November with three fundraising master classes in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland along with a 360 Degree Training Day in Wellington. We had solid crowds at all events and our special thanks must go to David Zerman and Sarah Barzel from Melbourne for giving their time and expertise to assist FINZ in that very full training week.
We are lining up some exciting coaches for 2012, especially during our Conference in Auckland. In addition, our aim is to have at least two new 360 Degree Training Programmes; one in Auckland and one in another main centre. We are working on a smaller version of the 360 for the provincial centres of which we hope to have at least two – one in the South Island and another, hopefully, in the Hawkes Bay. On top of that we will be holding a series of fundraising master classes on specialist topics in the latter half of the year.
Provided there is sufficient demand, we are looking at bringing Fundraising 101 from the School of Fundraising at Indiana University back to New Zealand next year. This five-day course does not come cheap - we are talking close to $2,000 in fees and will need a minimum of 25 attendees to make it viable. So some careful investigation will be undertaken before confirmation. Any expressions of interest are warmly welcomed.
At the time of writing, the general election is over and, whilst there is a clear winner, negotiations on who will be in the government are underway. We wait with interest as to whom will be the Minister for the Community and Voluntary Sector. We have been well served by Minister Tariana Turia and her Associate Minister Hekia Parata. We hope the same degree of importance for our sector is shown in new or confirmed appointments. Having just come from the Charities Commission’s probable final annual meeting before being merged into the Department of Internal Affairs there are justifiable concerns over the lessening of interest in our sector by the government. I pray I am proved wrong.
With best wishes,
James Austin
